Lunar Yoga

Yoga for the moon cycle

We are cyclical beings just like we have seasons, sunsets and sunrises, full moons and new moons. We are the microcosmos living in the reality of the macro cosmos.

We can follow the lunar phases of the new moon waxing until she is abundantly full and glowing, then the moon wanes and the light reflected is less and less until we have a dark sky and no moonlight at all.

In biodynamic farming, the moon phases inform when to plant and when to harvest – along with the seasons. Wise women and men across cultures and time have used the moon as guidance through the month.

My Feminine Seasons & Cycles online course is all about menstrual cycle awareness with yoga and ayurveda. Learn more here.

Menstrual cycle awareness

In the feminine physiology, we also have our inner moon. The microcosmic flow to the macrocosmic moon cycle. Our menstrual cycle starts with what we refer to as day 1 in our cycle when we start our period. Just like the new moon begins our lunar month. Perhaps we sense the dark moon of introspection and reflection just as our inner moon cycle commences.

As the actual moon waxes and grows so does our endometrium in our womb until we ovulate. The ovulation glow and abundance of potential just like the full moon. Potential for pregnancy perhaps. Or the abundance of hormones at this time giving us confidence and attractiveness (yes, there are actual studies in this: female strippers get more money from the punters when ovulating compared to other times of the month!).

Then the moon wanes and we move into our luteal phase when our body starts increasing in progesterone. Potentially to embed a fertilised egg. Or if we continue our inner lunar cycles the hormones suddenly drop. We become introspective again and we are once again at our dark moon leading to a new lunar cycle.

Living with our cyclic nature

When we start to appreciate our cyclic nature we can work with our natural flow. We can honour our moon cycles, or if no longer having a menstrual cycle honour the lunar cycles. When do we feel introspective and how can we truly honour this time of the month? When are we naturally more productive or creative? When do we feel physically strong? Just like we have our sunrise, midday and sunset we also have our monthly flow.

I dive deep into this from a lunar perspective as well as ayurvedic and yogic wisdom in our Feminine Seasons & Cycles online course. But from the dark moon on Tuesday the 13th of October at 7pm and the following 3 Tuesdays we will explore these phases in our online yoga sessions. You can join these classes as part of the Feminine Seasons & Cycles online course as well as our yogaembodiedonline monthly membership (you will get the zoom links within the course portals). Or simply book each class at the time here.

Please note most of us do not necessarily bleed with the moon as described above. Many of us move between the phases and some always menstruate with the full moon. You can still join the classes. And you are also very welcome if you are no longer cycling, don’t have a womb, on contraception, or never had a menstrual cycle.
